Theatre in a Multicultural America

Rage is Not a 1-Day Thing

Rage is Not a 1-Day Thing: Awele Makeba 4/06

COURSE DESCRIPTION

By reading and viewing diverse materials created and performed by artists of the following ethnic groups-African American, Latino American, Asian American, and Native American- we will examine specific issues that are manifested in the texts and performances. In order to procure in-depth learning experience, we will focus on African American theatre and drama. Since uneven treatment of the four ethnic groups (in terms of hours we will spend) is deliberately planned, students need to acknowledge its indispensability as well as efficiency.

Not only analyzing the texts, the students are encouraged to understand the changing demographic, economic, political, and cultural fabrics of the US through investigating the interrelationship between dramatic works and sociopolitical conditions. Thus, the readings will encompass a variety of genres-history, journalism, film, cultural studies, drama, and live performances.
